Lombok remains as quiet and peaceful as ever, and the year 2009 has seen a striking improvement in tourist numbers, which bodes well for the planned promotion of “Visit Lombok-Sumbawa 2012”. This is timed to coincide with the new international airport coming into full operation. Construction is now well advanced, with the 2750 m runway due to be completed in December and the terminal building in early 2010, but it is likely to be well into 2011 before the airport is fully operational.

The large $600 million Emaar Properties development project in South Lombok was due to come on stream with the opening of the new airport, but the programme is slipping a bit, because of financing problems, probably due to the global recession, which has now brought on a financial crisis in Dubai.

Las year Sail Indonesia included Lombok in its itinerary, and this was a great success, with upwards of 100 yachts calling in at the Medana Bay Marina in North Lombok between 24 and 28 September. It it is hoped to make this an annual event.

So Lombok is definitely on the “up”, and if you want a holiday where you can relax and get away from it all, Lombok is the place to be! "Unwind at Windy".
